Rubber Stoppers Bungs (electrometric closures for drug containers) are mainly used in stoppering vials and it is necessary to sterilize these as they are in direct contact with the final product. Though the trend of using pre-sterilized bungs from the market is still prevalent, their viability is still a question, owing to the various handling & transportation issues leading to questions on sterility.
Bung Processor cum steam sterilizer enables customers to reap benefits of ‘washing and sterilizing’ from single equipment. The bungs are loaded into a ‘drum’ and later placed into the sterilizer. The entire operation is done via PLC where in the pre-set program determines the wash sequence (Eg. Detergent Wash, WFI Wash & Silicon Treatment) followed by a final sterilization using HPHV cycle. This ensures complete sterility for the bungs. These bungs can later be unloaded in “sterile pouches/ bags” and transferred to the filling room, usually under laminar air flow conditions.

Terminal sterilization provides a higher degree of sterility assurance than aseptic processing is well understood and leads regulatory agencies around the world to require that if the product can be terminally sterilized it must be. The technology of hot water sterilization with counter pressure has been developed specifically for the terminal treatment of solutions in sealed containers.
The working principle is based on automatic counter pressure by injection of compressed air into the chamber during the entire cycle, to minimize the differential pressure across the containers generated by exposure to heat. The water shower over the product ensures that a uniform temperature distribution is maintained throughout the chamber during the sterilization phase. The high rate of water circulation and the two-stage water distribution system ensures accurate and homogenous temperature distribution in the product to be sterilized. Since the water comes into physical contact with the container the heat transfer is more efficient and the process efficiency is not affected by air pockets. The pressure in the chamber is continuously adapted to the internal pressure of the containers and the entire process can be controlled easily and accurately.
A Pure Steam Generator is recommendable for the production of pure steam. Also, pure steam should be used in place of filtered plant steam. The steam produced by a pure steam generator is used for sterilization of piping distribution systems, autoclaves, vessels, and sterile room humidification. This helps in the prevention of contamination of surfaces by particulate materials or biological and organic organisms like Pyrogens which remains ineffective in the case of plant steam.
